Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Mortal Realms was Hachette Partworks' first Age of Sigmar magazine. It ran for 80 issues from January 2020 to August 2021. It was built around the Soul Wars match-up of Stormcast Eternals against Nighthaunt, and added a lot of scenery and four premium armies along the way.
It finished five years ago, so what's left are back issues and part-collections. This guide lists every issue, prices what we can against today's RRP and says where the record is thin. We haven't subscribed to Mortal Realms ourselves. Our first-hand experience is with the Combat Patrol magazine.
How reliable is the record? Less so than for the other partworks. We found no Hachette issue pages for Mortal Realms. The contents here come from one fan source, FauxHammer's issue-by-issue list, checked against Lexicanum for issues 1-19. Every issue in our record is marked medium confidence, so check the contents against a listing's photos before you buy.
The short answer
Is it worth buying Mortal Realms back issues? For the named characters and a few kits, yes. For the rest, it depends. We can price only 12 of the 48 miniature releases against a kit we list, because much of Mortal Realms isn't the retail kit. The Soul Wars starter-set sprues, the easy-to-build models and the partwork exclusives have never been sold on their own.
Those 12 releases (15 issues) cost £117.85 at cover price against £326.75 of RRP today. That's £208.90 saved, or 63.9%.
What should you skip? The 29 paint, brush and scenery issues. Mortal Realms has more of them than any other Warhammer partwork we cover.

The whole run, in numbers
The method is the one from our Combat Patrol record, using each kit's RRP in our catalogue today. Half a ten-model kit counts as half its RRP.
| Cover price | Kit RRP today | Saved | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The 12 priced miniature releases, 15 issues | £117.85 | £326.75 | £208.90 (63.9%) |
| The other 36 miniature releases, 36 issues | £282.64 | not priced | see below |
| The 29 paint, brush and scenery issues | £231.71 | n/a | the part to skip |
| All 80 issues | £632.20 |
Most of the 36 releases we don't price aren't retail kits at all:
- Starter-set sprues. Soul Wars and 2015 Age of Sigmar sprues (9, 16, 19, 20, 23, 35, 41) and mixed sprues (24, 43).
- Easy-to-build models we don't list (1, 3, 4, 6, 8).
- Partwork exclusives, like Xandria Azurebolt (5).
- An Underworlds warband (27).
- Models we don't list or can't match to a kit yet, like the Tomb Banshee, Lord-Exorcist, Cairn Wraith, Judicators, Neave Blacktalon, Asteria Solbright and the Dreadblade Harrow.
- Kits where we're missing the RRP or the box size, so we can't price the issue: Crawlocke, Liekoron, the Knight of Shrouds, Gryph-hounds, Hexwraiths and Vanguard-Raptors.
- The Chainrasps in issue 52, whose match to a kit we list isn't firm enough to price.
For those issues, the magazine was the only way to buy those exact models, so there's no retail price to compare against.
The standout issues are the named characters. Lady Olynder (72) and Kurdoss Valentian (70) are each £37 at RRP, for £7.99. The Celestant-Prime (79-80) is £58 at RRP for £15.98.
Finishing a Nighthaunt army from the issues
Mortal Realms' Nighthaunt issues overlap with two Nighthaunt Spearhead boxes we list:
- Cursed Shacklehorde: issues 17, 21, 38, 60 and 68 give you Crawlocke and his Chainghasts, 10 Dreadscythe Harridans and 10 Bladegheist Revenants. That's three of the box's four kits in five issues. Issue 14 adds one Dreadblade Harrow, but it's the easy-to-build version and the box has two.
- Nighthaunt Spearhead: the Knight of Shrouds (56), Spirit Hosts (28) and 5 of its 10 Grimghast Reapers (64) are all in the run, along with Chainrasps in issues 1 and 52.
Those five Shacklehorde issues cost £39.95 at the UK cover price.
So a handful of back issues can make up most of a Spearhead. But if a seller wants much more than the old cover price, the box is usually the better buy. The cards show what the shops we track charge today in your market.
The premium sets
Premium subscribers paid extra for four more armies. FauxHammer transcribed the contents from Hachette's product list:
- Flesh-eater Courts: 20 Crypt Ghouls, a Crypt Infernal Courtier and an Abhorrant Archregent (from the Carrion Empire sprue), plus Athonian Camoshade.
- Sylvaneth: Drycha Hamadreth, Spite-Revenants and a Branchwych, plus four paints.
- Ironjawz: an Orruk Megaboss, an Orruk Weirdnob Shaman and Orruk Brutes, plus Yriel Yellow.
- Khorne: Flesh Hounds, Blood Warriors and a Bloodmaster.
The record doesn't give model counts for several of these, so we haven't priced the premium sets.
The premium surcharge was £2 an issue.
Buying back issues
Mortal Realms is back issues only now, and specialist retailers rarely stock it.
At the one UK specialist we checked, there was a single Mortal Realms listing. Most copies now change hands on eBay, often as part-collections.

Before you buy:
- These are older sculpts. The Liberators in 23 and 35 are the original 2015 sprue, not the current kit, and much of the Stormcast force is the Soul Wars starter-set version.
- Easy-to-build models are push-fit versions, often in fixed poses, not the multi-part kits.
- Check the photos. With only one fan source behind the contents, a listing's photos are the best check you have.
Painting a Mortal Realms collection
The magazine's paints are Citadel. Here's a starting recipe for each side, with the most widely owned brands first: Vallejo, Citadel, then The Army Painter. The paint matcher finds the nearest pot in any other brand.
Stormcast Eternals
Gold armour, a brown wash and blue cloth. See the Stormcast guide.
Citadel (Warhammer Paints)
Citadel (Warhammer Paints)
Nighthaunt
A white or pale grey undercoat under a glowing green-blue glaze. The magazine's own Nihilakh Oxide and Corax White issues point the same way. See the Nighthaunt guide.
Vallejo
Citadel (Warhammer Paints)
Army Painter
Citadel (Warhammer Paints)

And the tools the issues don't include:

Precision side cutter for close sprue trimming
Army Painter

Citadel mould line remover
Citadel

Liquid polystyrene cement, capillary applicator, 40ml
Tamiya

Verdict
Mortal Realms is the hardest of Hachette's Warhammer partworks to put a number on. Much of it is starter-set sprues, easy-to-build models and scenery that never had a retail price. It has more paint and scenery issues than any other, 29 of 80. Where the models are retail kits, it priced them well: at UK prices, 63.9% under today's UK RRP across the 12 releases we can compare. The best back issues to track down are the named Nighthaunt characters, the Celestant-Prime and the issues that build a Nighthaunt Spearhead. The rest are best bought as a cheap part-collection, not issue by issue.
Mortal Realms magazine FAQ
How many issues of Mortal Realms were there?
80, from January 2020 to August 2021, ending with the two-part Celestant-Prime. It was a UK partwork: we found no edition elsewhere.
Which armies does it build?
Stormcast Eternals and Nighthaunt, plus a Mortis Engine. The premium tier added Flesh-eater Courts, Sylvaneth, Ironjawz and Khorne.
Can I still subscribe?
No. The collection has finished, so it's back issues only.
Where do these figures come from?
The contents come from FauxHammer's Mortal Realms contents list, checked against Lexicanum for issues 1-19. We found no official issue pages. The prices are Hachette's UK cover prices, the RRPs are the ones in our catalogue today, and the savings are our own arithmetic. We never convert pounds into another currency and call it a local price.
