The Dark Ages is one of Hail Caesar's biggest and most popular periods: Viking raiders, Anglo-Saxon fyrds, Norman knights and the various kingdoms of early medieval Britain and Scandinavia, mostly fighting on foot behind locked shields. It's a period with an unusually large range of plastic kits. The shield wall is both the tactic and the painting opportunity. Round shields carry the individual colour and pattern in an army that is otherwise mail, leather and muted wool, so most painters block in the figures quickly and let a few dozen distinct shield designs carry the visual interest of the whole unit.
