American War of Independence
2 box sets · 5 kits we track
The 1775-1783 war for American independence, fought between British regulars and a Continental Army still finding its feet.
The American War of Independence sits between the tidy uniformity of European drill and the improvised look of a new army: British and Hessian regulars in full kit face a Continental Army that started the war in whatever its men owned and only gradually earned proper uniforms, alongside militia who never did. That contrast is the appeal for a painter. A redcoat battalion is a fast, repeatable job; the American side lets you mix hunting shirts, civilian coats and militia oddments with formal blue Continental uniforms in the same unit, so no two figures need match.
On the table: Formal European-style lines on one side meet a looser mix of drilled regulars and irregulars on the other, with skirmishing and ambush playing a bigger part than in later black-powder wars.
