The Union and the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865, fought in close-order infantry lines on America's own soil.
The American Civil War pits the Union against the Confederacy at the point where the old tactics of massed volley fire met rifled muskets and, for the first time, rail and telegraph. Battles are decided by long lines of infantry trading fire at close range, backed by field artillery and cavalry probing the flanks. It's a rewarding period to paint because the uniform divide does most of the work: Union blue against Confederate grey and butternut, with state and regimental flags carrying the identity the plain coats don't. A battalion is dozens of nearly identical figures, so most collectors settle on a fast, repeatable scheme and let the flags and officers stand out.
On the table: Close-range firefights between long infantry lines, with cavalry and artillery deciding the flanks rather than the centre.
