Settled pigment is why a pot that looked fine paints like chalk. Agitator balls sit in the pot and do the work every time you shake it; a vortex mixer or a dedicated shaker does it properly in seconds and pays back the moment you own more than a handful of pots. The size question is the one people actually search — a ball that is too large will not clear the neck of a dropper bottle, and one too small barely stirs a Citadel pot.

The Honest Verdict

Balls first: they are cheap, they go in every pot you own, and they solve most of the problem. A shaker or vortex mixer earns its place once shaking by hand is a chore rather than a habit — and the machines are largely marketplace stock rather than hobby-shop stock, which is why the price spread on them is so wide.
