Black Powder Franco-Prussian War

0 box sets · 5 kits we track

The 1870-1871 war that unified Germany, fought with breech-loading rifles and modern artillery in place of the old muskets.

The Franco-Prussian War sits at the modern end of Black Powder's timeline, closer to the trench warfare to come than the Napoleonic era before it: Prussia and its German allies against France, fought with breech-loading rifles, quick-firing artillery and the beginnings of industrial-scale warfare. Uniforms here are transitional too, still colourful but on the way to the drab tones of the next century - dark Prussian blue with the spiked pickelhaube against French blue and red, giving a painter a genuinely different look from the brighter Napoleonic uniforms most Black Powder collectors start with.

On the table: Longer-ranged rifle fire and faster artillery than earlier black-powder wars, with infantry tactics starting to loosen in response.
