Every "best brushes" thread ends the same way: buy a kolinsky sable. This guide covers what that actually means, why the hair matters, and which kolinsky brushes earn the recommendation.
What kolinsky sable actually is
Kolinsky is not sable at all - it is the winter tail hair of the Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica). The hair matters because of its structure: each strand tapers naturally to a fine point and carries microscopic scales that hold water and paint along the length of the hair, not just at the tip.
For a painter, that structure buys you three things:
- A reservoir. A kolinsky belly holds several strokes' worth of thinned paint where a synthetic holds one. Fewer trips to the palette means longer, smoother strokes and paint that doesn't dry on the bristles mid-stroke.
- A point that returns. Good kolinsky snaps back to a needle point after every stroke, for eyes, freehand and edge highlights.
- Longevity. Cared for (see brush care), a kolinsky lasts years. Synthetics curl and split in months regardless of care.
Why you may have struggled to buy one
Kolinsky is covered by CITES wildlife-trade rules, and in 2021 US Fish & Wildlife stopped accepting the paperwork - for several years Winsor & Newton Series 7 and other kolinsky lines were effectively unavailable new in the United States, which is why American threads are full of workarounds and European painters wondering what the fuss is. Supply has since improved, but US stock and prices still swing more than European ones - if you see a legitimate listing at a fair price, that is a reason to buy rather than wait.
It is also why counterfeits exist: a famous name with restricted supply is exactly what fakers target. Counterfeit Series 7 and Raphael 8404 circulate on marketplaces - buy from an art retailer, the maker, or a listing sold by the marketplace itself, not an unknown third-party seller.
The kolinsky brushes worth buying
The classic trio are separated by taste, not quality:
- Rosemary & Co Series 33 - the value pick and the one we point beginners at: proper kolinsky at a fraction of the famous names' prices, from a Yorkshire maker with no counterfeit problem to speak of.
- Winsor & Newton Series 7 - the reference point since 1866. Buy the standard line, not the short-bristled Miniature line, and mind the fakes.
- Raphael 8404 - the French rival; a fuller belly per size, so it carries more paint. Many painters who try both stay here.

Size: bigger than you think
The counterintuitive rule: a size 1 kolinsky paints finer detail than a tiny 5/0 synthetic, because the point is what paints, and the belly keeps that point wet and workable. Start with a size 1; add a 0 for eyes and freehand if you find you need it. Tiny brushes hold so little paint it dries before the stroke ends.

A kolinsky dies to dried paint in the ferrule, not to use. Never load paint past half the bristle length, rinse often, and wash it with brush soap at the end of a session - the full routine is in the brush care guide. Never drybrush or paint metallics with it; that is what cheap synthetics are for.
