Greek hoplites and Alexander's Macedonian pike phalanx, the ancient world's great set-piece infantry battles.
Classical & Hellenistic Greece covers the city-states and the empire that followed them: hoplite phalanxes standing shoulder to shoulder behind bronze shields, then the longer Macedonian pikes and companion cavalry that carried Alexander across Asia. It's one of the best-documented periods in ancient wargaming, with a wide range of plastic and metal kits to build from. Shields are where the painting effort goes. A hoplite phalanx is essentially one pose repeated dozens of times, so most collectors paint the tunics and armour to a quick, consistent standard and spend their real time on individual shield devices - also how you tell one city-state's contingent from another's on the table.
On the table: Dense pike and shield-wall infantry blocks that win by holding formation, with cavalry and light troops working the flanks.
