Value, not just entry price

The Cheapest Warhammer Armies, Per Point

Entry price tells you what a box costs. This tells you what an army costs — every faction ranked by what 100 points of it actually costs today, from sourced points and live shop prices. Two armies with the same box price can differ threefold once you field them.

Today Blood Angels is the best value in Warhammer at €12.24 per 100 points, against €43.39 for Adeptus Mechanicus — 3.5× the price for the same army on the table.

20 of 63 armies can be ranked this way — the rest have no box whose points we have sourced, and we would rather leave them out than estimate them. Points come from Munitorum Field Manual v1.2 (2026-08-05); prices are the cheapest we track today.

Why price per point, not price per box

Nearly every starting box costs about the same — that is a decision Games Workshop makes, not a fact about the armies. What differs enormously is how much army you get inside it. An elite faction fields a few expensive models, so one box goes a long way; a horde faction fields many cheap ones, so the same money buys a smaller share of a playable force. Ranking on the box price hides that completely; ranking per point is the comparison people mean when they ask which army is cheap.

It also means more painting: the cheaper an army is per model, the more models you own. How hard each army is to paint is the other half of this decision.

How exact is this, honestly?

The arithmetic is exact — a real price we checked, divided by a points value we sourced. The premise is a simplification, and you should know where it bends. We price one box and scale it, but armies don't scale evenly: your second and third box are rarely the same box, characters and big centrepiece models cost differently per point than the rank-and-file, and Games Workshop reprices points a few times a year. Treat the ordering as reliable and the exact figures as a good estimate of a moving target. Where an army's cheapest box is unusual for how people actually start it, its row will flatter or punish it a little.
