Basing Materials

A base is the last five minutes of a model and most of what people notice about a finished army. The materials divide into things you glue on (sand, grit, cork, flock, tufts) and things you spread on (texture pastes in jars), and the applicator question is separate again: a static grass applicator charges the fibres so they stand up instead of lying flat, which is the difference between a lawn and a smear.

The Honest Verdict

Tufts are the highest-impact thing per unit of effort in the whole hobby — they cover mistakes, they read at arm’s length, and they take seconds. Static grass and an applicator only pay off across a whole army. Texture pastes in a jar belong here; texture PAINTS in a pot are paints, and live on the paint pages with the rest of the range.
