The secretive First Legion - dark green Space Marines with a hidden shame, elite Terminators and a bike wing.

The Dark Angels look like a monastic order that happens to own tanks: robes over power armour, hooded heads, plumes and heavy iconography. The chapter's two famous formations give the army its shape - the bone-white Deathwing Terminators and the black Ravenwing bikes and speeders. That split is the real appeal for a painter. One army lets you paint dark green infantry, bone-coloured elites and black vehicles, which is three different disciplines rather than one repeated fifty times. The green is the tricky part; a colour that dark needs a considered highlight or the models vanish under table lighting. Robes are the other decision worth making early, since they dominate every model that has one.

On the table: A well-rounded marine force with two specialist wings - heavily armoured elites and a genuinely fast bike contingent.
